TL;DR

Midlothian is the center of Chesterfield's larger, newer assisted living: ten licensed facilities with 808 places in our October 2026 data, nine with memory care units. Families from Powhatan and Amelia often start here. Compare license level, memory care staffing, inspections and drive time for the most frequent visitor.

What does the Midlothian assisted living market look like?

Midlothian-address facilities10 (808 places, 9 with special care units)

Compared with Hanover's roster of mostly small homes, Chesterfield's median facility is licensed for 78 residents. That means more amenities and staff on each shift, and also a more institutional feel in some buildings.

Why do Powhatan families usually start in Midlothian?

Powhatan County has no VDSS-licensed assisted living facility and no CMS-certified nursing home, so the nearest licensed options are east along Route 60 and Route 288 in western Chesterfield. Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian is the closest acute-care hospital for much of Powhatan as well. For a parent from Powhatan, Midlothian is often the shortest drive that offers several choices.

How should I compare Midlothian communities that look alike?

Large suburban communities can look similar on a tour, so compare them on the things that differ in the record and in writing:

  • License level: confirm each is licensed for assisted living care, not only residential living care, if your parent needs moderate help.
  • Memory care: if a special care unit matters, ask for unit census and overnight staffing.
  • Inspections: open the last two years on the VDSS search and note repeat citations.
  • Price structure: base rate plus care levels versus all-inclusive; ask for the rate-increase history.
  • Auxiliary Grant: ask whether any AG residents live there, if funds may run low.

Our Chesterfield County page lists every licensed facility with capacity and recent inspection counts, sortable, and larger communities have profile pages with their full inspection history.

What about Chester and northern Chesterfield?

Chesterfield's other cluster sits in the north, with Richmond or North Chesterfield addresses near the Huguenot, Hull Street and Midlothian Turnpike corridors close to HCA Johnston-Willis and Chippenham, and a smaller group around Chester near Route 10 and Interstate 95. Families in Chester sometimes find Colonial Heights and Petersburg closer than Midlothian, so it is worth comparing in both directions.

What should I know about memory care in Midlothian specifically?

Because nine of the ten Midlothian-address facilities include a special care unit, families often assume memory care is easy to find there. Openings are the real constraint. Secured units run near capacity, and a bed may open only when a resident moves to a nursing home or dies, so ask each unit about its current waitlist and how it decides who gets the next bed.

Ask, too, whether a resident can move from the community's assisted living side into its special care unit when dementia progresses, and whether internal transfers get priority. A family that chooses a community with both levels may avoid a second move to a new building later, which is often hard on someone with dementia.

Finally, confirm how the unit's overnight staffing compares with Virginia's minimum for its census. Two communities a mile apart on the Route 288 corridor can make very different choices about staffing above the floor.

How long are drives from Powhatan, Chester and the Fan to Midlothian?

Drive times vary with traffic on Route 288, Route 60 and the Powhite Parkway, so test the route at the hour you would actually visit. A family member who will stop by after work on weekdays matters more than one who visits on Sunday afternoons. If the primary visitor lives in the city, a facility in Bon Air or northern Chesterfield may make more sense than one deep in western Midlothian, even if the parent's old home was in Powhatan.

Ask each community whether it provides transportation to medical appointments at St. Francis, Johnston-Willis or VCU, and what it charges for trips outside a set radius.

What if my parent is a veteran or has limited savings?

Ask early. VA Aid and Attendance can help a qualifying veteran or surviving spouse pay private assisted living costs, and the Auxiliary Grant can help someone with SSI-level income in a facility approved to accept it. Few large Midlothian communities accept the grant, so families with limited savings should ask each community directly and, if needed, widen the search to northern Chesterfield, Chester or the Tri-Cities, where more homes may participate.

Which agencies serve Chesterfield seniors?

Chesterfield is in the service area of Senior Connections - The Span Center, which provides aging services and the long-term care ombudsman. Medicaid, Auxiliary Grant applications and Adult Protective Services run through the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services, which serves both the county and the City of Colonial Heights.
